From Knowledge to Innovation – Intellectual Property as a Strategic Tool

On May 29, 2025, MGM STAR CONSTRUCT SRL was represented at the specialized seminar “From Knowledge to Innovation – How to Do It”, organized by the eBio-hub Center of Excellence in Bioengineering at the Politehnica University of Bucharest, in collaboration with ROMINVENT and the AOSR. The event took place at Building 6A, Politehnica University of Bucharest.

The MGM STAR CONSTRUCT delegation was joined by two research collaborators:

• Chiheb Walleni, PhD candidate at Universitat Rovira i Virgili
• Prof. Álvaro Pulzara Mora, Full Professor at Universidad Nacional de Colombia

The keynote lecture was delivered by Miruna Enescu from ROMINVENT, who provided a comprehensive and practical overview of intellectual property (IP) protection strategies for research and innovation. Her presentation addressed:

• Best practices for drafting patent claims
• Common pitfalls in patent applications
• Strategies for international IP protection

During the Q&A session, an insightful question raised by Chiheb Walleni sparked an engaging discussion:

“Is it possible to obtain a patent for a material that has already been published in a scientific article, if a new application for that material is discovered afterward?”

This led to a valuable exchange on the concept of “new use of a known substance”, emphasizing the importance of demonstrating novelty, inventive step, and a clear technical advantage to ensure patentability.

The seminar reinforced the critical role of intellectual property frameworks in supporting the transition from academic research to industrial and commercial innovation, highlighting the importance of well-structured collaboration between academia and industry—a core pillar of MGM STAR CONSTRUCT’s innovation strategy.
